Police embrace emerging social media tool

In this photo taken Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 Oakland police Sgt. Chris Bolton demonstrates usage of the Nixle notification service at police headquarters in Oakland, Calif. Across the county, law enforcement agencies have added a new form of social media to their arsenal of crime fighting tools.  Thousands of cash-strapped police departments are now heavily relying on the notification service Nixle to provide residents with real-time alerts on crimes in progress, traffic messes and missing children. With the San Francisco-based service approaching 1 million users, including officers in about 6,000 law enforcement agencies, it’s viewed by some experts as electronic community policing that uses the eyes ears of residents who text or e-mail authorities about crimes. Chris Bolton quickly fired off a flurry of text alerts to thousands of nearby residents through a social media tool for law enforcement agencies.
