  • Bernanke says more progress needed before stimulus pullback

A decision to scale back the $85 billion in bonds the Fed is buying each month could come at one of the central bank's "next few meetings" if the economy looked set to maintain momentum, Bernanke told Congress.   • Home sales close in on three-and-a-half year high
    By Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Home resales rose in April to the highest level in nearly 3-1/2 years and prices surged, offering the economy a buffer from the stiff headwinds posed by belt-tightening by Washington. The National Association of Realtors said on Wednesday existing home sales advanced 0.6 percent to an annual rate of 4.97 million units, the highest level since November 2009.   • Wall Street extends losses, S&P down 1 percent
    NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks extended their decline on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 falling 1 percent following remarks by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke which suggested the central bank was not ready to pull back on its economic stimulus efforts but may act if the economy continues to improve. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 112.68 points, or 0.73 percent, at 15,274.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 19.25 points, or 1.15 percent, at 1,649.91.   • PepsiCo rethinks U.S. pricing to attract more everyday buyers
    (Reuters) - PepsiCo Inc said it is tweaking its drink-pricing strategy in some parts of the United States, as it aims to wean consumers off the habit of buying soda only when it is on sale. The strategy, which PepsiCo refers to as "hybrid everyday value," involves narrowing the gap between soda prices on holidays and regular days. It aims to lessen the discounts on holidays, when a 12-pack of 12-ounce cans can cost as little as $2.50 to $3, and lower prices throughout the rest of the year, when the same package can cost as much as $5.99. ...
  • Bob Lutz, Chinese parts maker offer $20 million for Fisker: sources
    DETROIT (Reuters) - China's largest auto parts maker and a boutique car company led by former General Motors Co executive Bob Lutz have offered $20 million to buy "green" carmaker Fisker Automotive, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. Wanxiang and VL Automotive are looking to buy Fisker, which has not built a car since July, through a prepackaged bankruptcy deal.
